And yes, I had misunderstood you. I agree that there needs to be far less distinction on gender lines for domestic violence. I sincerely hope violence against men (and between same sex couples) is also covered.

I hope by "bluster" you understand that I don't mean "politely add to the debate".

Sadly, it's too often used as way of belittling the problem of domestic violence against women, and then all sides throw numbers around all over the place willy-nilly and with no consistency.

It's an important issue as well, and part of the same bundle of issues. I also hope it's included in the PSHE curriculum.

I also agree that the issues should really be tackled together, rather than always separated off into women-only (though I can understand why this particular announcement only mentioned violence against women).

But as details of the actual curriculum are sketchy at best, it's a bit difficult to make a judgment on that point in the context of the whole PSHE course.

I might have a look again at that bit and see if I could have typed it better...

I must have misplaced my babies sometime between the ages of 18 and 21. Perhaps when I left them at work?

also: "and don't bluster on about how sometimes women hit men too" is actually an issue I feel VERY strongly about, having worked closely with a homelessness service in Nottingham a couple of years ago. 1 in 4 men will be the victims of domestic violence (only reported figures mind you, and it's a LOT more stigmatised and harder to report than violence against women) and there are only 8 hostels in the UK which accept men fleeing violent partners. Only 1 accepts men with children. The hoops men have to jump through to prove they have been a victim are also shocking and disgusting. Something urgently needs to be done about the UKs attitudes to men as victims of domestic violence. The same way that violence against women needs to end as well. In conclusion, violence = bad. Gender discrimination in service provision = not something that should be happening in 2009.
